Managing Subject Codes

New Subject Codes must be created in both the mainframe SIS and Course Management. There is no integration between the two.

*After creating a new Subject code, it must also be added to online course platforms

Managing Subjects in Course Management

Once the Subject code has been created in SIS, add it to Course Management. It will be available immediately to use for new Courses.

The Subject field configuration page can be found under Course Management --> Academic Administration --> Subjects (https://sis.columbia.edu/academic-admin/subject-owner)

Make sure all data points match what is in the mainframe SIS.

Coming soon: the ability to deactivate Subject codes so they are no longer available to use on new courses.

Creating a Subject Code in CM

Course Management has a feature that allows Schools and Departments to restrict the list of Subject Codes available to select for new Courses.

  1. Go to https://sis.columbia.edu/academic-admin/subject-owner
  2. Select a School and Department (optional)
  3. Adding Subjects to a School or Department will limit the Subjects available to users at the School or Department to ONLY the options selected.

Restricting Subjects Available by Department

New Subject codes have to be added to several screens in mainframe SIS.

*Before adding a new subject code, on every screen check that the Subject is not already there.

Step 1: Add Subject Name to WCPF (formerly CPFX)
Step 2: Add details (Name and Long Name) onto the CODE screen. Code Type = CPFX
Step 3: Add CODE details to the SUBJ screen
