Registration Unit Rules
Registration Unit Rules are settings that govern the actions and limitations of students enrolled under a specific school, department, or program the during registration period. These settings dictate the number of classes, credits, and waitlists students can register for, as well as whether students can register/cross-register for classes as P/D/F during the Registration. These rules can be configured for different student populations at different levels which allows academic programs across the institution the flexibility to customize the student registration experience to align with specific academic requirements and preferences.
Populations of Students:
The list below contains information on the different student populations. Please note that more specific population groups like will take precedence over more general rules in Registration. For instance, a Unit Rule for a student group will take precedence over any set School level Unit Rules.
- School - All students enrolled in this school or fall under the school's division code will be impacted by these settings, unless their specific program has different Unit Rules (e.g., SEAS, SIPA, SBUS).
- Department - All students enrolled under this department will adhere to these settings during registration, regardless of the School settings (e.g., COMS, APAM, FILM).
- Program Code - All Students enrolled under this program will adhere to these settings regardless of any set department or school level settings (e.g., EMBA, EMPA).
- Student Group - All students that meet the logic for a particular grouping will be impacted by these settings (e.g., students with a 3.5+GPA).
Key things to consider:
- When a setting is left Blank with no value, it allows students an unlimited number of those items. For instance, a blank waitlist setting allows students to register for an unlimited number of waitlists during the registration period.
- When a setting is set to '0', students cannot register for any of those items. For instance, if Maximum P/D/F per Term is set to '0,' then students cannot opt to take any classes as P/D/F for any given term.
The table below outlines editable Unit Rule specifications and their impact on students:
Registration Unit Rules Settings
- Setting
- Max Term Credits
- Definition/Impact
- The maximum number of credits that a student can register for during the registration period. This value does not include the credits from classes that students are waitlisted for. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able to register for any classes with credits. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be allowed to register for an unlimited number of classes.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Max Waitlist Count
- Definition/Impact
- This setting is the maximum number of waitlists that a student can choose to be on during the registration period. For instance, if this is set to 5, it means that a student can be on a maximum of 5 different waitlists worth any number of credits. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able to join any waitlists for any classes. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be allowed to be on an unlimited number of waitlists during the registration period if there is no set limit to the Max Waitlist Credits setting.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Max Class Count
- Definition/Impact
- The maximum number of classes that a student can be in during the registration period. For instance, if this is set to 10, it means that a student can register for a maximum of 10 different classes worth any number of credits. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able to register for any classes. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be allowed to register for an unlimited number of classes.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Max Waitlist Credits
- Definition/Impact
- The maximum number of credits that a student's waitlisted classes can total to. This value does not include the total number of class credits that a student is registered for. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able join waitlists for any classes. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be able to join an unlimited number of waitlists at credit value.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Max Waitlist + Class Credits
- Definition/Impact
- This setting is the total number of credits of classes and waitlists combined that a student can register for during the registration period. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able to register for any classes or join any waitlists. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be allowed to have an unlimited number of credits they are registered or waitlisted for.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Max P/D/F Classes Per Term
- Definition/Impact
- The maximum number of classes that a student under this Unit Rule can opt to take as P/D/F. This means that each term, this value resets, so if set to 2, a student can take 2 classes as p/d/f in Summer, Fall, and Spring. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able to opt to take any classes as P/D/F per semester/term. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be allowed to register for an unlimited number of classes as P/D/F per semester/term.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Max P/D/F Classes Per Degree
- Definition/Impact
- The maximum number of classes that a student under this Unit Rule can opt to take as P/D/F for their entire program. So if set to 2, a student can take 2 classes as P/D/F during their time in their program. If this is set to '0,' students will not be able to opt to take any classes as P/D/F in a program. Alternatively, if this setting is left blank or has no value, students will be allowed to register for an unlimited number of classes as P/D/F until they graduate from the academic program.
- Examples of Potential Values
- *blank* or 0-99
- Setting
- Ignore Schedule Conflicts
- Definition/Impact
- This setting was created as an exception and is not a necessity for most programs. However, if this is set to 'Yes,' students will be allowed to register for classes that have conflicting start/end times. So, students could potentially register for Class A: 9:30AM-11:30AM and Class B: 10:00AM-12:00PM. If left blank, this setting will not affect your students or classes.
- Examples of Potential Values
- Yes/No
- Setting
- Restricted Course Set
- Definition/Impact
- This setting is optional and not a necessity for most programs. This field contains the classes that students under the specified Unit Rule are allowed to take. They will be unable to take courses outside of the listed course set.
